Alltel Phone Activation
- Find a phone from an acceptable carrier (Alltel or Verizon), the reason is because other carriers lock their phones so that they will only work on their network, but keep in mind that while Verizon Wireless phones are not locked to their network, only basic voice and text messaging features will work on Alltel, so Alltel phones are the only fully supported ones. However, if you know how to unlock Sprint PCS/Metro PCS/etc phones, then go ahead, but make sure you stay away from phones from Cingular Wireless, Suncom, and Tmobile because these are GSM or TDMA phones and will not work on Alltel's CDMA network.
- Locate the phone's ESN (Electronic Serial Number), this will usually be in the phone's programming menu or information menu
- Call Alltel (1-800-ALLTEL-1) from any phone but YOUR cell phone, because the service to it will be turned off
- Talk to technical support and say you would like an ESN change on your line (the phone number you want to put the new phone one)
- When they ask for the ESN, give them the one you found on the new phone earlier
- If they ask you which phone you are activating (they may ask this before the ESN), if it is an Alltel branded phone, your good to tell them what it is, but if it is a Verizon phone and Alltel does not carry it, pick the closest one too it, because Alltel does not activate non-alltel phones due to the large amount of non-working features that they can't help you with
- The tech support agent should guide you through the phone menus and tell you what to type in, and then you should be good to go

Make Your Phone A Modem
- MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FST1/FAST OR THIS WON'T WORK!!!
- To find out if you have this feature, go to axcess apps (if your phone doesnt have this feature you definetly don't have fst1) and when you connect does the D/1x icon next to the signal strength changed to something else? If it doesn't, then youll need to call 1-800-ALLTEL-1 and request for the FST1 feature code to be placed on your line, by the way there is no charge for this
- Data Cable or Bluetooth? If your phone has bluetooth and so does your computer/palm pilot, then you can use bluetooth to connect the devices. However, if your phone or computer does not have bluetooth (the alltel motorola v710 has bluetooth, but it may not work with computers) you will want to buy a data cable, which are usually max 10 bucks on ebay (just search for something like Audiovox 8410 Data Cable, or whatever phone you have)
- You may need to install drivers for your phone to work with the computer, in order to do this go to www.howardforums.com and pick your phone manufacturer from the forum list and ask where to find the PC drivers for your phone model
- Make a new dial-up connection (in windows xp, go to my network places (if you cant find this go to my computer, then click on it in the related places menu on the left sidebar)) and then on the left side bar click on "View network connections" and then again in the left side bar click "create new connection"
- The new connection wizard will open, click Next, then select "connect to the internet" on the next screen and click next, then select setup my connection manually and click next, select "connect using a dial up modem" and click next, for isp name you can name it whatever you want and then click next, for phone number put #777 and click next, for user name you put your ten digit phone [email protected] (example: [email protected]), and the password is alltel, select whether you want it to be the default connection and if you want other users to use it, then click next, and choose the box if you want it on your desktop or not then click finish
- In Network Connections right click on your new alltel dialup connection and go to properties
- At the top of the settings screen in the connect to box, make sure you have your phone checked and not your computers modem and press ok
- double click on the connection and make sure the user name and password is right and then click dial
- if you get an error like "line busy" or "cannot open port" then restart the phone and plug it back into the same place it was before (unless you are using bluetooth) and try again
- if you still can't get it to work, visit the forums and feel free to ask a question
Roaming Information
The first step to roaming is getting the latest prl onto your phone. To do that simply dial *228 from your cell phone and follow the recordings instructions (basically just press 2 then wait a minute). When you are in your home area (usually a few surrounding counties), you should not have a roaming indicator, so this will only be needed if you are travling out of town. When a roaming indicator appears on your phone it will either be a triangle (used on LG, Motorola, and Nokia) or an R (used on Kyocera and Audiovox), and these will be located at the top of the screen near the signal strenth. Your phone may also show "Roaming" or "Digital/Analog Roam" in addition to the basic roaming indicator, disregard these they mean nothing. Now to the important part, indicator blinking or not blinking. If your R/triangle is blinking then that means that you are free roaming (you may be using alltel towers or towers from another company, the phones do not show that information, but it is irrelevant). If the indicator is NOT blinking then you will pay additional money to make a call. Note that the indicator will only blink every few secondsso don't freak out if it goes 5 seconds without flashing. If you are in a free roam area but you find on your bill that you had roaming charges, call Alltel (1-800-Alltel-1) and they will refund you. Making calls/texting/voicemail notifications should work in all areas you have a digital signal. Enhanced data services such as QNC/1xrtt (where available)/picture messaging/mobile web/axcess or anything like that will work only in Alltel, Verizon Wirless, and US Cellular markets. Evdo roaming is currently unavailable however there are rumors that verizon wireless and alltel are starting to put something together for that.
